In Book Three we meet a group of mercenaries that has allied itself with Donnie and his Foundlings, but where did they come from? I had a lot of fun creating my very own A-Team like group. Their names are derived from the last names of many of my friendships back in school. In any case, I wanted to explain how they came to be and why they are helping the Foundlings, please enjoy.

Chapter 7: The Liquidators

Tranquility June 2008

“So Captain, are you sure you won’t reconsider my employer’s offer?”

Maxwell looked back over his shoulder and glanced at a young woman. She spotted his glance and smiled for a moment before averting her gaze in an attempt to hide her blush, “I am certain, Mr. Stout.”

“Oh, I see,” Stephen Stout stood out like a sore thumb in Tranquility. He looked very much the part of an agent in his black suit and dark sunglasses. The slightly balding man gave the comely woman the once over, and then turned back to Maxwell, “Wait, is she one of them?”

Maxwell turned back toward Stout and smiled, “No, Emily is human. Her brother, Dean was turned a few years back and they both ended up here.”

“I’m still surprised you ended up here,” Stout looked all around him at the makeshift log cabin city that made up the entirety of Tranquility. “I came to you because of all the shit we’ve been through; you’re the best of the best.”

“And you think it’s odd that I’d be here watching over lost vampires and their families, instead of making money as a soldier of fortune.” Maxwell’s gaze drifted off as if lost in a memory.

“I know there’s a reason, but I’m not here to delve into your past or second guess why you turned me down. You never the less agreed to help me and had me fly up here to the Great White North. What do you have for me?”

“As you asked, I gathered a team for you,” Maxwell pulled a file from inside his overcoat and handed it over to him.

“Paper, how retro,” Stout opened up the file and began reading.

“We don’t have all the fancy gadgets you have access to, but we get by,” Maxwell continued walking side by side, as Stout read through the dossiers.

“This guy Frazier, he’s your pick for team leader?”
